The issue of Palestine is one of the oldest disputes in the history of United Nations and probably there is no peaceful solution of this problem in near future. Palestinians are living in two areas mainly that are Gaza and West Bank. Many of you might be wondering why the area of West Bank is called as West Bank? The reason is that west bank area is located on the west bank of Jordan River.

Apart from geographical separation between Gaza and  West Bank, there is a political separation as well, In Gaza the dominant political group has been Hamas where as traditionally west bank has been the stronghold of Mahmoud Abbas’s Palestinian Authority. 11111 These two are main political groups of Palestine. Now this political gap is shrinking between Palestinians living in Gaza and Palestinians living in west bank.

The recent poll by the Palestinian center for policy and survey research finds that 45% of Palestinians believe that Hamas should lead them, where as only 19% said that Mahmoud Abas should be the leader of the Palestinians. This shows there is anger in current generation of Palestinians and they want harder stance from their leaders on this decades old issue. As per this survey of the Palestinian center for policy and survey research 78% Palestinians wants Mahmud Abbas to resign. Now, these figures should be more worrying for Israel rather than for Mahmoud Abas himself because the alternate of Mahmoud Abbas that Palestinians have chosen, which is Hamas, they have harder approach on this issue as compared to Abbas.

Probably the main factor behind the rapid increase in Hamas’s popularity was the results of 11 days Hamas Israel war in May last year where Hamas delivered a solid below to Israel and caught them in surprise completely. Not only this, Hamas was also able to get the support from two big global super powers Russia and China against Israel which Israel was not expecting, this shows Hamas has raised its status significantly in recent years. Israel dubbed this 11 days war as “Operation Guardian of the walls” and Hamas dubbed it as “Saif Al Quds” which means the sword of Jerusalem. This 11 days long conflict was short but it was extremely intense. Earlier I mentioned that Israel was caught in surprise during this war, here is the reason for that, despite Israel’s military superiority, world saw a much improved firepower from Hamas. For the first time it happened that 25% of Israel was paralyzed during these 11 days including the Israeli capital Tel Aviv, this has never happened before.

Hamas’s leader Yahya Sinwar has said “We have proven to Israel that somebody is protecting the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Another Israel Gaza conflict will change the map of the middle east”. Considering the recent success of Hamas in 11 days war, this statement of Yahya Sinwar is carrying, a lot of weight especially when we saw how big powers like China and Russia pressurized Israel for seizes fire. So in near future, Israel might not find it easy to increase the escalations with Palestinians beyond the certain limits as Hamas is not the same Hamas which it used to be years  ago.

Poll: US Public Support for Israel Wanes as 68 Percent Call for Ceasefire

TEHRAN (FNA)- Israel’s war on Gaza is upsetting many Americans who think it must follow growing demands for an immediate ceasefire, according to a new poll. The Reuters/Ipsos survey found only 32 percent of respondents said “the US should support Israel”. That is down from 41 percent from a poll conducted on October 12-13 – just days after the war broke out. About 68 percent of respondents said they agreed with the statement, “Israel should call a ceasefire and try to negotiate”. Some 39 percent supported the idea “the US should be a neutral mediator”, compared with 27 percent a month earlier. Only 4 percent of respondents said the United States should support Palestinians, while 15 percent said the US shouldn’t be involved at all in the war. While the US has been a significant Israeli ally, just 31 percent of respondents said they supported sending Israel weapons. The plunge in support...
