UNARMED INDIAN SUPERSONIC MISSILE FIRED TOWARDS PAKISTAN - WAS IT BY MISTAKE?

On the evening of 9th March 2022, an un identified object was spotted in the Pakistani airfields which was later on found destroyed near the empty fields outside the Mian Channu area of Pakistan. Initially it was assumed that it could be a drone or a training jet of Pakistan Airforce. However, following day Pakistan army’s Spokesperson made a sensational revelation that this was actually a supersonic missile which was fired from Indian side but it was unarmed. 

Now, there has been no official response from Indian side so far about this development which has raised many questions that how a missile test ended up landing in Pakistan which was supposed to be heading towards the Indian Ocean. Which is why Pakistani authorities have already raised questions on the quality of Indian defense equipments. 

Many experts in Pakistan are also believing that this wasn’t mistake but a deliberate attempt by the Indian forces to test the effectiveness of Pakistani air control system against Indian supersonic missiles. If that is the case than it has to be admitted that India was failed to achieve desired results since Pakistan’s DGISPR has claimed that Pakistan intercepted this missile while it was still inside the Indian territory which shows Pakistani air defense has got this ability to detect and destroy Indian missiles before they actually enter into a Pakistani airspace. Interestingly this event is also taking place around the election time in India just like 26th February 2019’s incident where Indian fighter jets violated Pakistani air space and next day Pakistan shoot down two Indian air crafts in retaliation. This time also, such incident has happened while India was busy in state elections which indicate that probably there would be some political objectives also behind this failed adventure. Pakistan has said that it has asked New Delhi to explain this. It is also important to note that just few days back India had cancelled its biggest Air Force exercises near Pakistani border for unknown reasons and days after that this sudden development has taken place which is increasing the suspicion level even further, was India trying to test Pakistan’s response during sudden attacks? Apparently it looks so but still, it would be interesting to see what would be India’s official response. 

Some analysts are also looking at this incident with American prism, keeping in mind that America and Pakistan’s relations are not ideal at the moment due to the fact that despite US and western pressure Pakistan decided not to condemn Russia or not to take anti Russia side on Ukraine Russia issue so they think US might have given green signal to India to carry out this operation. If that is the case, it might disturb Pakistan US relations further. However it is less likely to be the case since clashes between India and Pakistan does not suits US since its target number one at the moment is China not Pakistan where as India Pakistan war will divert US and western focus from China. 

Another important factor to consider is that the missile under discussion here is called as Brahmos which is joint Russia India production. However due to many US sanctions on Russia because of  Ukraine invasion, it won’t be easy for India to maintain supply line of such made in Russia products since over 86% of Indian weapons are made in Russia. So amid vulnerable supply line, can India play such a big gamble? India needs to answer these questions. Timings of this missile test is also important as just after two days 15th round of India China talks will be held on Indian side after the failure of previous 14 rounds so was it a message for China also since Pakistan is the comprehensive strategic partner of China and any security threat to Pakistan directly affects China as well? There are so many questions that needs answers from Indian side.
